DPI (dots per inch) is a concept that determines the sensitivity of a mouse. The higher the DPI, the faster/smaller the mouse movement becomes. While it's important for gamers, for regular users, 800-1200 DPI is usually sufficient. You can adjust the sensitivity according to your needs by changing the DPI settings. For beginner users, default settings are often the best.

So when you move the mouse 1 inch in 1600 DPI mode, the sensor divides it into 1600 "points"—but with the DPI setting in the system, you choose how many *pixels* those 1600 points correspond to. Simply put, you might think the sensitivity at 1600 DPI is actually *twice as precise* as 800 DPI, but you're really just using the sensor's detection capacity. The DPI scale on gaming mice is often just a marketing gimmick—most gamers already get fine enough movements with 400-800 DPI. Also, the "default settings are usually fine" approach is a bit of a lazy suggestion. Mouse sensitivity depends on the person's playstyle, their monitor, and even their mousepad surface. For example, 800 DPI might seem enough for an FPS player, but if you're using a 21:9 monitor, the same DPI could make your browser scrolling painfully slow. On top of DPI, in-game sensitivity and Windows mouse speed settings come into play—looking at DPI alone is misleading. The best approach is to keep DPI at a fixed value and optimize by tweaking the other sensitivity settings. Otherwise, you'll have to go through a whole new learning curve every time you change mice.

If you consider a 1000 DPI mouse as a 1 megapixel sensor camera, then 4000 DPI would correspond to an 8 megapixel one, I swear. At very high DPI, movements can go down to micro-vibrations, but that's not always an advantage; just like increasing the bitrate when recording in 4K without actually improving the quality. Similarly, polling rates on keyboards (e.g., 125Hz vs 1000Hz) are also related to sensitivity. If you're using an 800 DPI mouse with a 1000Hz polling rate, compared to the standard 125Hz, you'll get a much smoother and lag-free experience. Of course, if you crank your mouse's DPI to 4000 in the driver/software, and it slips on any surface, you'll see your cursor going crazy, just like having a 48000 DPI mouse in a 360fps game but only getting the sensitivity your sensor allows.
