Guys, I've heard about overclocking, but I don't really get what it is or why it's needed. They say you can make your hardware work faster, but won't it burn out? Can someone explain how it works in simple terms? Are there any risks or nuances? And can you overclock everything at once, or are there limitations?

Overclocking is like pushing a car beyond its factory settings to get more FPS in games or speed up system performance. A couple of years ago, I overclocked my budget rig with a Ryzen 5 3600 and RX 570—first, I increased the CPU clock speed from 3.6 GHz to 4.2 GHz (plus 1.2V), and the GPU from 1250 MHz to 1400 MHz. The result was stable 100+ FPS in GTA V instead of 60, with load temperatures never exceeding 80°C. Profit was clear, but there were risks: if you overdo the voltage, the hardware starts heating up like an iron, and once my GPU froze on a black screen for 4 hours. That’s when I realized that just increasing voltage isn’t enough—you need a good cooler and constant temperature monitoring via HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner. The golden rule is: don’t push hardware to the limit without preparation. Intel/AMD CPUs and nVidia/AMD GPUs have their own voltage and temperature limits, which are best not exceeded—CPUs usually max out at 1.3-1.4V, GPUs at 1.2V, and temperatures shouldn’t go above 85-90°C. I tried overclocking cheap DDR4-3000 RAM, but stability was an issue—the system would either boot or freeze until I manually set the timings instead of relying on automatic XMP profiles. Not all hardware overclocks equally: budget models hit a wall faster, while high-end parts can run for years on overclocks. And yes, don’t forget about voltage droop from the PSU—my 650W setup ran smoothly, but when I switched to 750W, the overclock became even more stable. If you’re not experienced, it’s safer to just buy a pre-overclocked build—less risk that way.
