Hello, everyone always says "it won't burn" when it comes to overclocking, but there's evidence that even a little pushing shortens component lifespan. Is even a 5-10% overclock really risky long-term, or does it only cause problems with excessive voltage? What do you think is a 'safe' margin? Do you prefer performance while keeping temps in check, or...?

Overclocking limits are actually a very subjective topic because each component has different tolerances on the production line. For example, in my 10 years of experience, while a 5-10% overclock works perfectly fine on most GPUs, increasing the voltage significantly shortens their lifespan. Personally, I push up to 15% overclock by carefully managing fan speeds and voltage, but this requires good cooling and continuous stress testing. For instance, when working with an RTX 4090, I make sure to keep the voltage below 1.1V—otherwise, temperatures can skyrocket even within thermal limits. As for firmware protections, modern motherboards and GPUs come with thermal throttling and voltage safeguards, but these are really just the "last line of defense." Real damage happens gradually; a phenomenon called electromigration causes circuits to thin out over time due to periodic voltage spikes. My advice is to disable VSync when overclocking and manually adjust fan curves. This way, components stay at optimal temperatures while keeping voltage in check. If there’s such a thing as a "safe margin," it’s maintaining 10-15% voltage stability and keeping temperatures below 85°C. Performance boost now or five years of trouble-free use later—it’s your call, but choosing the wrong path leads to long-term regrets.
