I still keep a manual OC rig in my bedroom, mostly because I love the little performance spikes you can squeeze out of a card that’s otherwise sitting at its stock boost. Back in early 2024 I grabbed a 4090‑ti and ran the stock 2.2 GHz boost, but I felt the frame‑rates in Valorant and Apex were already solid. After a few weeks of watching the boost curve, I nudged the core clock up to 2.32 GHz and tightened the voltage a notch. The result? About a 4‑5% bump in 1440p FPS, and the extra heat was manageable with a custom AIO loop. The gain was modest, but the satisfaction of hitting that extra DPS in competitive matches made it worth the extra wattage for me. That said, I’ve also learned when not to chase those numbers. On my secondary rig—a 4070 Super with the factory‑locked boost—I tried a manual overclock and ended up with unstable builds and a noisy fan curve that made the whole system louder than a crowd chant. Once I switched back to the auto boost, the card settled into a smooth performance envelope and my power bill actually went down. So my take is: if you have a high‑end card and you’re comfortable tweaking voltage and monitoring temps, manual OC can still shave a few frames and be fun. In my case, I still see value in manual overclocking, though it depends on the hardware and the goal. With my reference RTX 4090, I stick to auto-boost and only get about 2% extra performance, but when I apply a manual profile of +150 MHz on the core and +300 MHz on the memory, I see a 5-6% jump in ray-tracing benchmarks without the temperature exceeding 78°C or power draw rising more than 30W. The difference is more noticeable on mid-range cards or CPUs with a wide thermal margin; there, fine-tuning multipliers and voltages can translate into several extra frames per second and better use of the power budget. That said, it’s not a one-size-fits-all practice. In newer GPU generations, boost algorithms are already quite aggressive, and the marginal gain from manual overclocking shrinks—especially if they come with factory overclocks. Plus, the risk of overheating or reducing the chip’s lifespan goes up if cooling isn’t managed well. My advice: if you have solid cooling and want to squeeze out every last bit of performance, it’s worth experimenting; if you prefer simplicity and stability, auto-boost or factory-overclocked models are enough.
