I'm curious about what overclocking fundamentally is. Does it actually provide performance gains, or does it just shorten the lifespan of the GPU/CPU? How should temperature and voltage settings be balanced? What should be considered for system stability? What are your user experiences?

I overclocked for the first time last month, and my system crashed in both of my first two attempts. On the third try, I lowered the voltage to 1.25V and kept the temperature at 80°C, and it ran stable with an average 15% performance boost.
