To get this right, there are a few key things to consider: the TDP of the CPU-GPU, case airflow (intake-exhaust setup), budget, and of course, your noise tolerance. For example, if you're building a system with high-end parts like a 125W+ i7/i9 and an RTX 3080, poor airflow will quickly lead to thermal throttling and increased noise. At this point, an AIO cooler—especially a 240-320mm radiator model—keeps temps 10-15% lower while keeping fan speeds low, giving you a quieter experience. On the other hand, a high-quality air cooler (like the Noctua NH-D15 or be quiet! Dark Rock 4) can match or even beat that with just a single fan setup, especially if you optimize airflow in the front and top of the case. Air coolers have the advantage of being super low-maintenance—just clean the fan’s dust and reapply thermal paste when needed—and they’re usually cheaper than AIOs. If your budget is tight and you can tolerate a bit more noise, a good 120mm fan paired with a solid heatsink works just fine.
