PSU: Do you prefer fully modular, semi-modular, or non-modular?

When choosing a power supply, which do you find more important: the convenience of fully modular cables that you can easily remove and attach, or preferring semi-modular ones where you only use what you need? Why? How does the cable management of your PSU affect the cleanliness and airflow of your system?

I had a friend who asked me the same question last month. Honestly, I always preferred modular PSUs too, but in my last build I went with a semi-modular one and honestly, I was blown away. In my most recent system, I found out that 12 cables were completely unnecessary—my case looked like a messy spaghetti junction inside. After switching to that semi-modular PSU and only using the cables I needed, the airflow improved and temps dropped by up to 5 degrees. With fully modular PSUs, you have to unplug every single cable just to clean things up, and sometimes you can’t even find the right one, causing the system not to boot. With semi-modular, you only get what you need, making clean and tidy builds way easier. Now, when building new systems, I always go for semi-modular PSUs—they just make sense in terms of both maintenance and performance.

I go for direct semi-modular based on my PSU experience, honestly. With fully modular you’re constantly plugging and unplugging cables and the whole thing turns into a mess. Semi-modular gives you a price edge too, plus you don’t have a bunch of extra cables cluttering the build—cleaner airflow and tidier overall. My system only has the essential 24-pin + CPU + maybe one or two PCIe cables; the rest stays out of my way. As for airflow, even if you skip the modular-cable hassle you still have to think about placement. My build stays clean and that keeps fan speeds in check, but fully modular cable management isn’t for the faint of heart, that’s for sure.

Man, I used to be a full modular fanatic too, even used a Corsair RM750x in my first gaming PC. But then a friend of mine had their CPU suddenly die on them, and when I checked it out, the cable mess in the PSU was causing fan and overheating issues. Rumor has it, but the serious cable clutter was blocking airflow like crazy. After that incident, I switched to semi-modular. I still use enough cables, but I leave the biggest bundles fixed. This way, I don’t have that confusing pile of cables like in full modular builds, and I can still manage the cables I need. Airflow improved a lot, and temps stayed stable. Now when I look at semi-modular PSUs, I can rest easy knowing there won’t be any cable chaos.

Okay, so I prefer semi-modular because being able to plug in the cables I need and ditch the rest really helps with keeping things clean, bro. I do everything I can to keep the inside of my case from getting dirty 😅

I've run into the same issue before—PSUs with a mess of cables can block airflow to the fans with their wires. Fully modular fans say, "I’ll connect whatever I want," but for me, cutting down on unnecessary cables was more important, so I went with semi-modular instead. For example, if you're building a mini-ITX system and the case is super tight with only CPU + GPU + 2 fan connections, a semi-modular PSU keeps extra cables out of the way. Airflow stays clean, especially when you mount fans at the back—no cables getting in the way. Exactly, pick what fits your needs; no need to deal with extra cables.

I was a bit indecisive about PSU selection, to be honest. I used to prefer fully modular ones because I loved adjusting the cables according to my needs and having control over the order inside the case. But in my last build, I tried a semi-modular PSU, man, and I can't describe how much easier it was. No cable clutter means better airflow and a cleaner look. Back in the day, pulling out unnecessary cables was such a headache—did I break something or what? I think both have their pros, but now I lean more towards semi-modulars. Especially in setups where airflow matters, not having tangled cables is a huge plus. Full modular does offer freedom, but for me, simplicity tailored to my needs wins. Which one do you prefer? My experience says semi-modulars have the edge.
