How do DDR4 memory module timing parameters, bus width, and power consumption affect each other? Could you provide a general overview of how latency values like CAS latency, tRCD, and tRP contribute to performance? In your opinion, how do these factors practically impact gaming and VR applications?

DDR4's bandwidth is primarily determined by "clock frequency × number of transmission lanes," but real-world performance is closely tied to timing parameters like CAS latency (CL), tRCD, and tRP. CL represents the number of cycles it takes for data to emerge from the column address, tRCD is the wait time to switch from column to row address, and tRP is the time to precharge the row before accepting the next access. The smaller these values are, the faster data can be retrieved effectively, even at the same clock speed—making latency crucial in games and VR. On the other hand, DDR4 operates at a low voltage of 1.2V, reducing power consumption by about 30% compared to the previous DDR3 generation. While overclocking to high frequencies (e.g., 3200MHz) increases power draw, proper thermal design minimizes issues, and the resulting FPS gains often offset latency concerns. Conversely, improving CL from 16 to 14 reduces latency by roughly 12%, smoothing out load times and frame rate fluctuations. In practice, for optimal gaming or VR performance, balancing "frequency × latency" is key. Start with a module around 3000MHz with CL14, and if possible, upgrade to 3200MHz or higher while keeping CL under 15. This approach maximizes both bandwidth and latency benefits. Power-wise, as long as your PSU and cooling are solid, issues are minimal—but for long VR sessions, thermal management directly impacts performance, so ensure proper heatsinks and fan placement.
