Oh man, I was really confused about this DDR4 RAM thing when I first got it too, honestly. That was back in 2016 when I was switching from DDR3 to DDR4. Back then, when I played games and they'd stutter, I realized I needed something a bit faster. When I went to buy DDR4, the first question that popped into my head was, "How fast are these, and will my system even support them?" I'd say the biggest difference with DDR4 is in voltage and speed. Compared to DDR3, it uses 1.2V instead of 1.5V, so it heats up less and consumes less power. And in terms of speed, it’s a total game-changer—DDR3 maxed out at 2133 MHz, while DDR4 goes up to 3200 MHz and beyond. I ended up getting a 2400 MHz DDR4 for my old system, and when I saw 3000 MHz modules out there, I thought, "Man, did I make a mistake?" But the performance boost wasn’t that huge. So, the biggest advantage DDR4 gives you is stability and future-proofing. You’re asking how much RAM you need? I think that depends on your use case. For stuff like office work and light gaming like I do, 16GB is plenty. But if you’re into editing, video work, or high-performance gaming, you might need to go up to 32GB. Some newer games even recommend 16GB, so getting 32GB is like investing in the future. All in all, if you’re going for DDR4, make sure to check what speeds and capacities your system supports. My board, for example, only supported up to 2400 MHz, so even when I put in a 3200 MHz module, it ran at 2400 MHz. That means the RAM you get will only run at your system’s maximum supported speed, so the performance boost will be limited. I’d say check your motherboard’s manual first to see what it says, then make your purchase.
