I also hesitated for a while when I upgraded my GPU last year. With a limited budget, I ended up getting an RTX 4070, mainly considering three things: first, the VRAM. Nowadays, AAA titles often require 12GB+ VRAM, and even 20GB on an RTX 4090 gets eaten up quickly. Second, power consumption. The RTX 4070 has a TDP of just 200W, which is noticeably more power-efficient than the previous generation—saving enough on electricity to buy a few cups of coffee.
For gaming, VRAM and frame rate are definitely the top priorities. I run games like *Cyberpunk 2077* at 1440p with high settings and 60 FPS, and it even handles RT Overdrive. For rendering tasks, it’s all about CUDA cores and VRAM bandwidth. I occasionally use Blender to render some models, and the RTX 4070 is significantly faster than my old RTX 3060 Ti.
Now that I upgraded from a GTX 1060 to an RTX 3060 about a year ago, I can say: first, set a budget and then see what the market currently offers. In my case, I got a 3060 on sale for €300 – it was perfect for 1440p gaming, and the DLSS features really helped with newer titles like Cyberpunk.
Display connections and power consumption are underestimated factors! My old 550W PSU was enough for the 3060, but with a new PC, you should aim for 650W+ in case you upgrade to a 4070 later. And yes, VRAM (8GB on a 1060 vs 12GB on a 3060) makes a huge difference in RT games or Blender scenes – you notice it right away when switching between projects. So: define your user profile (gaming only? streaming? rendering?), check your budget, and then look up benchmarks for your top games.
