I'm curious, does real-time ray tracing technology actually significantly improve graphics quality in games and other applications, or is it just hype? Is it worth the performance loss? How long do you think it will take for this technology to mature?

While looking at the revolution ray tracing has brought to graphics, I can't help but compare it to nVidia's DLSS technology. DLSS not only compensates for the performance loss caused by ray tracing but also enhances image quality. Similarly, ray tracing adds depth to graphics by providing realistic lighting and shadows. We can see this especially in next-gen games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition. However, without an "assistive technology" like DLSS, the performance cost of ray tracing needs to be considered. It seems inevitable that ray tracing will become the standard with future hardware improvements, but it may still take a few more years for its development to be fully realized.

Ray tracing definitely takes a serious toll on performance, but the results are so striking that ever since I got my NVIDIA RTX 4090, I’ve kept it enabled in games. Cyberpunk 2077 can be heavy for those who haven’t optimized the in-game ray tracing balance, but even at the highest settings, you can hit a stable 60 FPS at 4K. The lighting, shadows, and reflections I get in return are so realistic that I can’t even watch older graphics anymore. Instead of waiting for the future, you’ll adapt now—otherwise, you might end up asking yourself in the future, *"Why did I play at 30 FPS on max settings?"* With RTX 40 series solutions like Dynamic Resolution and Frame Gen right at our fingertips, ray tracing is worth trying, even if it means sacrificing some performance in the short term. In the long run, the realistic visuals will find you.
