I was actually surprised when I tested the reference design for the RTX 50 series last year and found that GPU thermals became a bottleneck just like the CPU. At first, I thought I could get away with an 850W power supply and a standard 3-fan air cooler in a mid-tower case, but during a full 3DMark run, the GPU shot up to nearly 95°C almost instantly, triggering thermal throttling. I swapped in a custom air cooler with thicker heatsinks and more heat pipes, but the peak temps still hovered around 90°C and never stabilized. In the end, I had to switch to an all-in-one 360mm liquid cooling system to keep temps under 70°C even at full load. Since then, the GPU’s boost clocks have remained stable, and it handles ray tracing and AI deep learning workloads without a hitch. I also upgraded to a 1000W PSU, so I no longer have to worry about voltage drops or current limits. My use case involves gaming, real-time ray-traced video production, and small-scale machine learning experiments. Air cooling just couldn’t handle the heat buildup during long renders, so liquid cooling was the only real solution. If you’re planning for high loads like this, I’d strongly recommend starting with a power supply that has plenty of headroom, optimizing your heatsink and fan layout, and then considering liquid cooling as the next step.
