When I hear about air cooling, the first thing that comes to mind is the seminar I gave last year about my Arduino project, where I showed kids how we continuously measured and recorded heat inside a case. Of course, the temperature shot up past 40 degrees, and the kids started asking me, "Teacher, why does this happen?" So, I cranked the fan speed to 100% and slathered on thermal paste with my hands until it was really thick. The result? The temperature dropped to 10 degrees—you wouldn’t believe it. Then, after some tinkering, I realized that when the paste is too thick, heat transfer isn’t actually efficient; it acts like a blanket. That’s why the paste should be as thin as a film, or else the fan won’t be enough. As for airflow direction, I think the most critical thing is to align the fan’s airflow parallel to the heatsink’s fins. In the past, I’d mount the fan perpendicular to the side wall, thinking, "The air needs to go somewhere," but that just made the heat hit the fins directly. Once I aligned the fan parallel to the heatsink, heat dissipation evened out, and the temperature dropped by another 3-4 degrees. Even when using a passive heatsink, you’ve got to clean the gaps between the fins thoroughly to remove dust—otherwise, dust builds up over time and traps heat. My advice? When balancing fan speed and thermal paste, start with an extremely thin layer of paste, then set the fan speed to maximum and dial it back from there. That way, you can easily find the optimal balance.
