What affects thermal performance in air-cooled cooling systems? Are fan speeds the only factor, or do the type of heat sink material and heat pipe design also play a significant role? How much does airflow direction and internal case airflow circulation impact performance?

Last season, when I got a new RTX 3080, I really focused on optimizing the cooling because my old system was constantly thermal throttling, forcing the fans to run at nearly max speed almost all the time. My first attempt was just slapping in some stronger fans, but that barely made a 5% difference. Then I looked into the thermal paste and decided to switch to a copper block instead of aluminum. Since copper has much better thermal conductivity, the GPU temps dropped by 10°C right away, and the fans could finally run quietly at moderate speeds. The airflow direction and case layout made a huge difference too. My old case only had a single exhaust fan at the back, so hot air wasn’t getting pushed out effectively. I opened it up, added an exhaust fan on top, and properly directed the airflow. I also reorganized the cables to stop blocking the circulation. In the end, the GPU temps dropped from 75°C to 55°C, and the system became nearly silent.

Thanks for bringing up a great topic—your computer's cooling performance really does directly impact its lifespan and stability. If you'd like, we can also discuss some practical tips about fan speeds and heat pipe designs.
