Switching to PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs felt a bit like going backward for me. Last year, I got the chance to install next-gen SSDs in PCIe 4.0×4 systems for a project. During setup, the incredible feeling of writing at speeds over 7000 MB/s was amazing—the way working files transferred in seconds made the desktop system feel like it was "breathing" with relief. But what stood out was that under sustained loads, performance wasn’t as stable as I expected; when I measured the SSD’s temperature manually, it hit 85°C. Since I hadn’t invested in cooling solutions, temperature fluctuations by the end of the first week forced some data blocks on the drive to be read again.
Later, when I tried a PCIe 5.0 laptop, the experience was surprising: even with a clamshell cooling setup, the SSD would heat up within 2-3 minutes of running a data compression task, causing the system to throttle itself. Naturally, the performance graph took a nosedive. The same thing can happen on desktops, especially in stuffy rooms like basements. Ultimately, I realized that PCIe 5.0’s speed comes with the caveat of proper cooling—otherwise, you’re just setting yourself up for performance penalties. I think most real-world users would get a more balanced, longer-lasting experience with a well-judged PCIe 4.0 system.
