When choosing an SSD, I first look at the PCIe generation because that directly translates to bandwidth. For example, PCIe 3.0 x4 has a theoretical limit of 32 GB/s, while PCIe 4.0 x4 jumps to 64 GB/s. If my budget allows, I always go for PCIe 4.0—especially noticeable in multitasking or heavy data transfers. PCIe 5.0 does offer a performance boost, but the nearly doubled prices make it worthwhile only for specialized use (like broadcasting) for now.
As for flash memory type, QLCs are cheap and high-capacity, but their weak TRIM and dedicated cache can slow down with frequently optimized files. TLC is my preference—models like the Samsung 980 Pro strike a good balance. While lacking DRAM can reduce performance by 10-15%, the price difference makes it a viable option in some cases (like just gaming). Ultimately, it’s smarter to aim for the "most balanced performance for my needs" rather than the "fastest SSD."
