Older SATA SSDs are bottlenecked at around 6 Gbps (roughly ~550 MB/s), while NVMe drives can hit up to 32 Gbps (over 3.5 GB/s) on PCIe 3.0 x4 and even 64 Gbps on PCIe 4.0. That massive transfer speed gap might not be noticeable at first with smaller files (like Unity or Unreal project folders), but it makes a huge difference when compiling projects or working with large textures.
Back in the day, the lack of NVMe support wasn’t really an issue—most LGA 1151 or newer motherboards support NVMe boot. The ones that don’t are usually pre-2014 second-hand hardware. As for pricing, 1TB SATA SSDs go for around $50–$60, while NVMe drives sit at $60–$80. The performance gap is worth it in most cases.
I’d say it really depends on your use case: if you’re constantly moving projects around while developing games, the boot and transfer speed boost from an NVMe will be noticeable right away.
