When selecting a SATA SSD for a new build, what factors should I prioritize?

I'm planning my son's first gaming PC and want to use a SATA SSD as the primary drive. What should I consider when comparing options: capacity vs. endurance, sequential vs. random speeds, power consumption, and any thermal issues? Also, how important is the drive's controller technology for everyday gaming and game loading times? Would a larger capacity outweigh slightly higher endurance ratings? Any advice on balancing these priorities would be great.

When it comes to a first gaming build, I’d say the sweet spot is a 1 TB SATA SSD with a reputable controller (most mainstream drives use a Marvell or Silicon Motion controller, and they’re perfectly fine for game loading). In my experience, the real bottleneck for games is random read speed—that’s what determines how quickly textures and assets pop in while you play—so pick a drive that advertises strong 4K random IOPS (around 80–100k IOPS is a good benchmark). Sequential numbers matter less for daily gaming, but anything above 500 MB/s will keep large installs loading quickly. Endurance isn’t a big concern for a gaming PC unless you plan on hitting the drive with constant write-heavy workloads (like frequent modding or recording). A 600 TBW rating on a 1 TB drive is already overkill for a teenager’s usage. Power draw and heat are virtually negligible on SATA—the drive will run under 5 W and stay cool in a typical mid-tower case. If you can stretch the budget a bit, go for the larger capacity (1 TB vs. 512 GB) because games keep getting bigger, and the extra space will save you the hassle of juggling installs. In short: prioritize random performance and capacity, and you’ll get snappy load times without worrying about endurance or thermal issues.

Do you have a target capacity in mind for the SSD, and is the budget flexible enough to prioritize endurance over size? Also, will the drive be used mainly for OS and games, or do you plan to store other data on it as well?
