I've heard that webcams come in different types: some connect directly to the processor, while others go through a separate chip. How exactly does image processing and transmission to the PC work? Why do some models perform better in low light than others? What role do the sensor and resolution play in all this?

Just recently, I dove into this topic myself when I was building my first PC. I remember thinking at the time that "regular" webcams were just marketing fluff for offices, and I wanted proper image quality, so I went for a hardware-based solution. I swapped out my cheap Chinese camera for a C920 and immediately noticed the difference: it has a dedicated MJPG encoder chip that compresses video on the fly right in the camera instead of just dumping raw data over USB. Plus, its sensor is better—a 1/2.8" Sony IMX291 that, while struggling a bit in the dark, still picks up *something*. Meanwhile, when I tested a cheap "laptop-style" camera with a custom chip, it just gave me a black screen in pitch darkness—probably either a crappy sensor or a weak processor that couldn’t handle the load. As for sensors and resolution: if the sensor is tiny, like in those 720p budget cameras, it catches fewer photons, which means noisy images in the dark. But if a camera has a night mode, it either has IR illumination or a more sensitive sensor (like Sony STARVIS). The key thing, though, is that the hardware has to keep up—if the camera’s chip is weak, even a great sensor will lag or produce artifacts. I once tried pulling a FullHD stream on an old laptop, and it kept choking and freezing because the CPU was maxed out. So in the end, it’s better to get a camera with a hardware encoder, and if you need night mode, make sure the sensor is from Sony or OmniVision.
