A colleague recently hyped me up about a high-resolution webcam and got me ranting about built-in laptop cameras. Nowadays, when picking a webcam, it's not just about resolution—what else should we consider? Hardware privacy switches, autofocus, low-light performance... The options keep piling up, and now I'm not sure what to prioritize. How do you guys balance performance and privacy needs? Any practical buying tips?

Dude, exactly like you said, cameras have become so optional now, like they're packed with features you'd find in a smartphone. I recently got the Logitech C920, which goes up to 1080p, but honestly, I don’t need to hype it up—720p is more than enough for my gaming streams. And hey, have you checked out your friend’s setup? I mean, those "hardware kill switch" buttons that physically shut off the camera—mine doesn’t have one, so I’ve been lucky so far, but with everyone having 3-4 cameras on their desks these days, it makes total sense. My advice? If you’re on a desktop, grab one of those lens covers—trust me, you don’t wanna end up in one of those "people spying on your connections" videos. At least MacBooks have that little green light, so you know when it’s on, but on Windows, I’m tired of constantly checking app permissions. Also, night vision cameras actually work—back in the day, if I turned off the lights at home, my pictures would be a mess. Now? Even in low light, they look decent. So, my take is: first, figure out what you need it for (streaming, meetings, secret recordings?), then instead of just looking at price-to-performance, think about which features you actually need. Based on my experience, if privacy’s a concern, prioritize cameras with a physical shut-off option, or at least install anti-camera hack software.
