Smartphone cameras have come so far in recent years that I often find myself thinking I don’t need an extra camera in many situations. What about you? Do you own a dedicated webcam, or do you prefer using your phone? Where do you see the advantages or disadvantages of using a webcam? For video calls, content creation, or just casual chats, which do you find more practical? I’d love to hear about your experiences!

A few weeks ago I swapped my old Logitech C920 for my phone as a webcam—just to see how much the quality actually improves. With the current iPhone 15 Pro (ProRes 4K/60 fps) and a simple mount, the picture in video calls (Discord/Zoom) was almost noise‑free and sharper than the dedicated streaming webcam. For pure content (e.g., Valorant clips or talk shows) I still use the GoPro as my main camera—the phone only comes in as a backup or for quick recordings. The biggest advantage of the phone is flexibility: wireless access via apps like DroidCam or EpocCam, automatic white‑balance adjustment, and the ability to pair an external mic. The downside is battery drain and the constant need to think about power outlets/cables—annoying on long calls. For basics like Zoom meetings the phone is definitely enough, but for professional streams or low‑light situations I’d still go with a classic webcam.

These days phone cameras have gotten truly amazing, especially with 4K and high‑fps options. I end up using my phone instead of an external webcam in most cases—no extra gear needed for video calls or recording YouTube content. In well‑lit environments, the phone’s auto‑focus and lighting adjustments are super handy. Of course there are some downsides. A fixed webcam can be more convenient than a phone; you don’t have cable clutter on your desk, and you don’t have to manually tweak the angle. Plus, for professional creators, webcams with extra features (like background blur) can be more useful. But overall, my phone is more than enough for everyday use.
