Minimum wages are rising rapidly in many EU countries. In the past two years, countries like Germany and Spain have seen increases of over 15%. Similar trends are also evident in Central Europe, with Poland and Hungary following suit. In Turkey, however, the latest data from TÜİK suggests that despite nominal increases, real wages are struggling under inflationary pressure. In this economic climate, what policies do you think should be prioritized to maintain the real purchasing power of minimum wages?

If we compare Turkey’s situation to the minimum wage increases in Europe, we can really shed light on our real problems, bro. For example, in Germany, we see that the minimum wage has been indexed to basic expenses like food and housing in recent years – they adjust it every year based on inflation. Over here, things are a bit different because the nominal increases announced by TÜİK don’t really hold up in real terms. It’s like trying to run toward rising grocery prices while someone keeps slamming the brakes on your salary. Honestly, the most important thing that needs to be done is to automatically index the minimum wage – meaning it should adjust automatically based on inflation. Like Poland’s semi-automatic system, but more dynamic. On top of that, we also need to integrate taxes and social benefits into this process. Just like government support for heating costs, it wouldn’t hurt to subsidize minimum wage earners with tax refunds or assistance for transportation and food.
