Guys, I've always been skeptical about cryptocurrencies. Are they just speculation, or do they actually hold value? They run on blockchain tech, but is this level of volatility normal? Do you think they could be a long-term investment, or just a passing trend? What do you guys think?

In recent years, as interest in cryptocurrencies has surged, the concept of “value” has also become a hot topic of discussion. In fact, value essentially rests on a balance between an asset’s utility and speculation. First‑generation cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin form the foundation of blockchain technology, and that technology still has the potential to eliminate inefficiencies in financial systems. For example, the multi‑day transaction times of SWIFT for international money transfers can be solved in seconds with crypto projects like Ripple. But the volatility you hear about is basically because the technology isn’t mature yet. Bitcoin’s drop from $20,000 to $3,000 in 2017 and its climb back to $60,000, Ethereum’s 400 % rally in 2021… Those price swings stem from the fact that institutional investors and regulations haven’t fully settled yet. As for whether it’s a long‑term investment vehicle, that’s a confusing question. Bitcoin is seen as digital gold, yet unlike gold it has a hard cap (21 million coins), so it’s considered a kind of “scarce‑supply” asset. On the other hand, other blockchains such as Ethereum and Solana generate added value beyond simple money transfers through smart contracts, NFTs, and DeFi applications. So the “value” of a cryptocurrency depends not only on speculation but also on how useful the underlying technology is. For instance, Ethereum’s switch to Proof of Stake in 2023 cut its energy consumption by 99 % and earned greater acceptance from regulators, which was reflected in its price. But there are also plenty of risks. Regulatory pressure (the SEC’s constant lawsuits in the US, the EU’s MiCA framework), the entry and exit of big investors, even a single tweet from Elon Musk can move prices. So the question “are cryptocurrencies really valuable?” is determined not just by the fact that they run on a blockchain, but also by regulation, institutional adoption, and technological progress. In short, I believe some crypto projects will survive in the long run. Those built on infrastructures like Ethereum or Solana are in a position to leverage the innovations blockchain offers. However, putting all your money into a single Bitcoin and thinking “this is my retirement” is a risky approach. Jumping in just because it’s trendy without doing proper research doesn’t get you past speculation.
