I didn’t go through the shift from local servers to the cloud, but I did experience the move from Dropbox to Google Drive on my old team. At first, everyone was complaining about how slow syncing was—files getting stuck for half a day without updating. But a month later, we realized those "sync times" were just a perception issue: critical files were actually saving in seconds. The real problem was our 50Mbps connection getting maxed out by all the internal traffic.
Then came the scare: an external client accidentally accessed a shared folder in Drive because someone used the "anyone can view" link. It was a human error, not the provider’s fault. After that, we enforced two-factor authentication on every project and trained the team on proper folder permissions. The lesson was clear: speed is tangible—you see it right away—but security is an invisible cost until something goes wrong. Now I prioritize solutions with end-to-end encryption and detailed access logs, even if the first sync takes a couple of extra minutes.
Last year, I faced a very similar dilemma, except I was migrating to AWS for my own projects rather than a company. At first, when considering 100+ employees accessing it simultaneously, local servers with a 1Gbps fiber connection outperformed the cloud in file synchronization. However, after a team member forgot their work laptop at a meeting and it was stolen—along with sensitive customer data—we decided to fully transition to the cloud out of security concerns.
