Hey everyone, I've noticed that companies are always moving to cloud network monitoring. So, is it a good idea for a small team or an individual to switch to cloud-based network monitoring? What do you recommend in terms of cost, setup process, and maintenance? We're short on time—should we opt for the cloud instead of setting everything up on-site?

I moved all my monitoring to the cloud for a small office network last year. When I compared it to on-premises solutions, here’s what stuck with me: At first, I had a few IP cameras and a NAS on the LAN running LibreNMS, but I couldn’t access it from my tablet. So I tried Nzyme’s cloud version—its clean interface and instant DNS alert pop-ups on a green screen won me over. Cost-wise, LibreNMS was free, but with 2TB of camera footage filling up the NAS constantly, cloud storage made more sense. I now pay $15/month, keep data for 3 months, and old footage gets auto-deleted. The biggest time-sink was figuring out the rules—seeing firewall logs in the cloud dashboard and getting 1,000 blocks a day made me realize the system was actually working. Maintenance is zero effort; if something breaks, I just get an email. If time is tight, shifting to the cloud and at least monitoring critical devices with a 30-second delay makes sense. Then, if needed, you can add on-prem tools like an NUT server or Zabbix on OpenWRT. My experience? Forget fussing over "what if I set up something else"—the monitoring just works automatically.

Instead of setting up the same thing locally, if you want to minimize the overhead—especially as a team—you can compare **Grafana Cloud** with **Zabbix’s cloud version** or **PRTG Network Monitor’s cloud service**. Grafana Cloud excels in speed when it comes to dashboards and data visualization, while PRTG’s cloud version is more user-friendly and, with its sensor-based pricing, may not break the bank for smaller teams. However, PRTG’s cloud service can get pricey depending on the number of sensors. Zabbix’s cloud version, on the other hand, stands out for its flexibility thanks to its open-source roots, though it might take more time to set up and configure. The best approach is to take advantage of free trials and pick the one that fits your needs best. When you compare them in terms of cost and ease of use, you’ll have an easier time making a decision.
