I want to build a cybersecurity setup from scratch for coding projects. I'm considering basic components like computers, routers, firewalls, and IDS/IPS. I don't have a strict budget, but what should I keep in mind while researching? Are hardware-based solutions more advantageous than software-based ones? For example, can I start with open-source IDS tools and later transition to professional hardware? What do you recommend? What should I focus on for a budget-friendly yet reliable setup?

Exactly, one of the most common questions I encountered when setting up a budget-friendly cybersecurity setup was this. Initially, I started with a low-cost router and firewall combination, then later enhanced it with IDS/IPS using open-source tools. For example, you can combine both hardware and software advantages using open-source firewall solutions like pfSense. Starting with open-source IDS/IPS tools (Snort, Suricata, Zeek) and upgrading hardware as the budget allows is a logical strategy. I began by running Snort on a VM to detect threats in my traffic. Later, I opted for a more robust firewall for some critical services (e.g., Protectli devices). In addition to being budget-friendly, these tools also have strong community support.
