As a restoration enthusiast, I often wonder about the best sourcing channel: buying online through specialized platforms, going directly to the local dealer, or attending dedicated auto restoration fairs and shows. What are your criteria for choosing? Price, availability, technical advice, or something else? Share your preference and the reasons behind favoring one purchasing method over another.

For my first restoration of a Porsche 911, I initially turned to specialized sites like eBay Motors and online spare parts shops. The price was clearly the major advantage: I found a front headlight at half the price compared to local dealers. But availability quickly became an issue: the part was out of stock, and the delivery time exceeded the two weeks initially expected, putting the project on hold. Faced with this setback, I went to the city dealership. There, the advisor not only confirmed the immediate availability of the same headlight (at a slightly higher price) but also explained the exact mounting specifications and provided a small installation guide. This technical support was crucial in completing the restoration on time. Today, I alternate between the two channels: I scour online platforms for good deals, then quickly check local availability to get the service and advice I need. The criterion that takes priority for me remains the price-availability combination, with added weight given to technical support when the project is tight.

Online platforms specialized in auto parts offer the best price-to-availability ratio for common parts, whereas I go to local dealers or trade shows when I need technical advice or a rare part, since the staff can check compatibility on the spot.
