When choosing sustainable electronic devices, first check the energy efficiency. In Europe, the EU Energy Label and the ENERGY STAR certification clearly display average power consumption. Additionally, the European Repairability Index provides a good indication of how easy a device is to maintain – a high score usually means a longer lifespan and lower replacement part costs. Another important factor is durability and modularity. Devices with easily replaceable components like batteries, RAM, or SSDs can be used for much longer. In my last purchase, a laptop with a Repairability Score of 8, I was able to upgrade the RAM myself, extending its lifespan by several years – which ultimately proved cheaper than a newer but non-repairable model. For material sourcing and environmental impact, established certification labels like EPEAT or TCO Certified are useful. Both evaluate not only energy consumption but also the use of recycled or low-toxicity materials. If you don’t want to rely on brands, you can use the databases of these certification programs to filter for products with high scores. To get good value for money, consider refurbished devices and older model generations. They usually meet the same energy and repairability standards but are significantly cheaper. Combine this with a comparison of total costs over the expected lifespan (energy consumption × years + maintenance), and you’ll get a sustainable device that also saves you money.
