Recently, there's been a shift from using headphone outputs to directly connecting to sound systems in digital DJ sets. What's the quality difference between these methods? What factors do latency, the risk of audio cuts, or hardware requirements depend on? What do you use?
What's the best audio output method for digital DJ sets?

The biggest advantage of going from the headphone output straight to the sound system is the latency issue. For example, I use a Traktor Kontrol S4 Mk3, and when I send a direct line‑out from the headphone jack to the mixer, the delay is almost 0 ms. But if you connect the headphone jack to the system speakers, you get around 30–50 ms of latency and you’ll lose sync, bro. That’s why I always stick with the direct line‑out.
There’s also a serious difference in sound quality, honestly. When you plug into the headphone jack, the D/A converters aren’t ideal and the audio quality drops a bit, especially in the bass and high frequencies. In my last gig I took a direct USB out from a Focusrite Scarlett Solo to the sound system, and the sound was really clean. Hardware‑wise, USB audio interfaces are much more stable, and the new DJ software and hardware already support direct system output. My recommendation is to use at least a 24‑bit/48 kHz‑capable device.
