I'm curious, when we talk about the inflation rate, how exactly is it calculated? For example, which products are taken into account, and how do they measure the increase in prices? Or is it just the prices in supermarkets that are considered? In your opinion, how reliable is this system?

When calculating the inflation rate, they mainly use the CPI (Consumer Price Index), bro. In this system, the government and statistical agencies (like TÜİK in our country) think of the products and services households spend the most on each year as a “basket.” That basket includes categories like food, clothing, housing, transportation, health, education, etc. So it’s not just grocery prices; it also includes rent hikes, electricity bills, even movie tickets. To measure price changes, they compare the prices of the same items each year and express the average increase as a percentage. For example, if a loaf of bread that cost 10 TL last year is 11 TL this year, that’s a 10% inflation rate. But they don’t look at just one product; they consider thousands of goods and services and calculate weighted averages. The system is theoretically sound, but it can be misleading when a few dominant items have wildly fluctuating prices. For instance, recent food price spikes pushed inflation higher, while price drops in areas like technology helped balance it out. In my view, this system is generally reliable because it’s done by academic and professional teams. Still, you have to remember that inflation varies with different living standards. Like, if you’re someone like me, the inflation you experience as a monthly spender could be different from mine, bro.
