What methods do you prioritize to improve internet performance at home or in the office? For example, router positioning, channel selection, QoS settings, changing DNS services, or closing unnecessary background apps. Also, what are your experiences with newer technologies like wired connections and Wi‑Fi 6? Which setting do you think makes the biggest difference, and what’s the most practical way to implement it? I’d love to hear your tips and insights!

I've tried several tweaks to improve my home network, and the most impactful ones were adjusting QoS settings and changing the Wi-Fi channel. First, I placed the router in the middle of the room, away from thick walls and large electrical appliances. Then, I used the router's web interface or a spectrum analyzer app (like Wi-Fi Analyzer) to find the least congested channel—usually channel 1 or 11 on 2.4 GHz, or any clear channel on 5 GHz. Next, I enabled QoS and prioritized TCP/UDP traffic for streaming and gaming, while deprioritizing background updates for smartphones. Switching the DNS to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) also significantly reduced latency, especially when loading multiple pages. For wired connections, I moved critical work devices to Cat 6 Ethernet cables—this eliminated any unexpected lag. If your router supports Wi-Fi 6, upgrading devices to the 802.11ax standard can double real-world speeds in crowded environments. In short, the biggest improvements came from optimizing the Wi-Fi channel and enabling QoS with a focus on essential traffic—all of which can be done through the router’s admin panel in just a few minutes without needing new hardware.
