In the decision between **Lancom** and **MikroTik RouterOS** for enterprise operations, I’d personally lean heavily toward **Lancom**—especially in environments with high security requirements or complex network topologies. Lancom stands out here with **stable, long-proven firmware** that receives regular security updates and maintains a clear separation between the LANCOM Operating System (LCOS) and the underlying hardware. This is crucial because while RouterOS is budget-friendly, its open-source-based architecture is often more vulnerable to zero-day exploits. In penetration tests, I’ve encountered fewer critical vulnerabilities with Lancom than with RouterOS—particularly in models like the **LCOS FX series**, which are optimized for high availability and VPN clustering. WAN optimization (e.g., traffic shaping, QoS) works **far more reliably and granularly** here, without the need for manual kernel tuning nightmares like those required in RouterOS. RouterOS, on the other hand, has advantages where **budget, flexibility, or niche features** like BGP or WireGuard support are critical—but that’s where the pitfalls lie. Performance can degrade significantly under load if you don’t meticulously fine-tune the configuration (e.g., with PPPoE or GRE tunnels). VPN solutions like OpenVPN or IPsec? I’d **never** use them for critical infrastructure on RouterOS—the implementation often comes with bugs (e.g., CVE-2023-40074).
