When building a budget PC, how do we balance the CPU and GPU within limited spending? Is the performance goal gaming, or multitasking and office work? While considering secondary factors like cooling, power supply, and expandability, which criteria should take priority to achieve the best price-to-performance ratio? In your opinion, which configuration approach is more sustainable?

Last year, when I was trying to build a budget gaming PC for around €800, I faced the exact same dilemma: Should I invest more in a stronger CPU or a better GPU? My main goal was to run modern titles at "1080p High settings," but I also wanted the system to handle streaming and light photo editing. The deciding factor was the game engine: most modern games are GPU-heavy, while the CPU matters more for older titles and multitasking. I went with an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G (with integrated graphics) as a fallback and allocated the rest of the budget to a used GTX 1660 Super. The result was a well-balanced system: the GPU delivered solid 1080p framerates, and when I later upgraded to an RTX 3060 Ti, I only had to swap out the CPU—the 550W 80 Plus Bronze PSU and cooling setup were already sufficient. One key lesson from my build was not to skimp on cooling and the power supply. I chose a mid-sized air cooler that kept both the Ryzen CPU and GPU below 70°C during long gaming sessions, and I went with a 550W PSU that had enough headroom for future GPU upgrades. I also picked a motherboard with an extra M.2 slot and free PCIe x16 slots so I could add more components later without major changes. For a sustainable budget build, I’d recommend sizing the GPU based on your target resolution first, then choosing a slightly stronger CPU to handle future CPU-intensive tasks. Always leave some headroom for cooling, power supply, and expandability.
