When building a budget PC, one question that always comes to mind is whether to go with AMD or Intel for the CPU. Especially when it comes to the price-to-performance ratio, which one makes more sense? In newer generations, power consumption, cooling needs, and upgrade options can make a huge difference. What do you guys look for? For example, in different use cases like gaming, office work, or content creation, which side has been more advantageous for you?

First off, in terms of price-to-performance, both AMD and Intel’s latest-gen CPUs are competitive when building a budget PC. Right now, the Ryzen 7000 series (especially the 7600X) and 13th-gen Core i5s (like the 13400F) offer roughly the same performance, but AMD stands out with lower power draw and the AM5 socket’s long-term upgrade potential. As for Intel, the LGA1700 socket is nearing its end, but they still cover a wide range from Celeron to Core i9—meaning you might have to wait a bit longer for upgrades. Cooling and power efficiency also differ: AMD’s 6nm Ryzen 7000 chips run more efficiently, while Intel’s 10nm Arrow Lake (14th-gen) or Raptor Lake (13th-gen) series generate more heat—even a budget Cooler Master 212 EVO might struggle. So, if you’re building a long-term system, AM5 makes more sense; or if you want the flexibility to upgrade without changing sockets for both gaming and office use, Intel’s option might be better.
