Last spring, I built a system with a budget of around $15k, focusing primarily on the CPU-GPU balance. I went with a Ryzen 5 5600X and prioritized more RAM and an SSD over a GTX 1660 Super because, aside from gaming, I was working on light video rendering and a massive Unity project—so storage and multitasking performance were critical. For the motherboard, I chose a B550 chipset; thanks to its expansion slots and BIOS updates, I was later able to upgrade to an RTX 3060 with just a few BIOS tweaks—super easy. For the PSU, I went with a 550W 80+ Bronze unit and picked a modular model for better fan control and cable management, making airflow and cable cleanup a breeze. For cooling, the stock cooler wasn’t enough, so I added a 120mm AIO, keeping temps below 70°C and even allowing for some overclocking. In short, by directing the budget toward a future-proof platform and extra RAM/SSD instead of just CPU-GPU, both immediate performance and future upgrades went off without a hitch. I’d recommend you do the same—prioritize a forward-looking platform and splurge a little on RAM and SSD. That way, your next GPU upgrade will be almost seamless.

In a budget PC, prioritizing the CPU-GPU balance is key: for most gaming and productivity workloads, the GPU should be slightly above the CPU to avoid becoming a bottleneck. An underpowered processor won’t let the graphics card reach its full potential, while an overly strong CPU paired with a weaker GPU will quickly sit idle. In practice, I recommend a current mid-range CPU (e.g., AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel i5-12400) and a "gold standard" previous-gen GPU (e.g., GTX 1660 Super or RTX 3060 with 12GB) that fits the budget while leaving room for future upgrades. For storage, a fast NVMe SSD boot drive (around 500GB) is a must, as it drastically reduces system and load times. For bulk data, a cheap SATA HDD (1–2TB) as a secondary drive suffices. When choosing a motherboard, opt for one with at least two M.2 slots and sufficient PCIe lanes—this makes future GPU or NVMe upgrades easier. A 550–650W 80 Plus Gold-certified PSU provides enough headroom for later upgrades and ensures stable power delivery under heavy loads. Don’t overlook cable management and cooling: a simple mid-tower case with good airflow (e.g., Fractal Design Meshify C) and a budget-friendly 120mm front fan are enough for the basics. If needed, you can later add another fan or an all-in-one liquid cooler without making cable management worse. Finally, allocate your budget first to CPU + GPU, then fill in storage and cooling, and choose a flexible motherboard and efficient PSU to easily swap components later.

Bro, for 1080p 60fps, should we prioritize the CPU or GPU to get the best bang for our buck, or should we split the budget evenly and focus on storage?
