Additionally, lower-capacity versions of DDR5 are now available at more affordable prices compared to DDR4. Motherboards are also trending toward fewer PCIe slots and simpler designs, reducing power consumption. I tried the same approach with a budget group of around €550. I used an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G with integrated Radeon Graphics, and I noticed a significant difference in light games like Valorant and Fortnite without needing a dedicated GPU. For the RAM, I went with 8GB DDR5 (4800MT/s) from Crucial at a reasonable price, which was enough to bridge the gap between performance and memory, especially with Dual-Channel improvements. The motherboard was from the B550 series with a limited number of PCIe x1 slots, which helped reduce power consumption and simplified cooling. The result was a stable system, smooth operation for daily tasks and some games, and a cost under €600 without sacrificing much performance. If your goal is power efficiency and a simplified design, combining a strong integrated GPU processor with low-capacity DDR5 is worth trying.

Last year, I built a budget system that relied entirely on the integrated graphics unit (iGPU) in an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G processor. The goal was to run light games and record 1080p videos. I was blown away by the iGPU’s performance when I ran games like *Valorant* and *Fortnite* on low to medium settings—consistently hitting 90 FPS on medium graphics, which far exceeded my expectations for a system without a dedicated GPU. I also noticed a significant drop in power consumption compared to a system with a separate graphics card, which helped lower my electricity bill. At the same time, I decided to try 8GB of DDR5 instead of 16GB of DDR4, since it was available at a reasonable price. While the capacity was lower, the faster memory speed (5600 MT/s) made a noticeable difference in game load times and editing applications. I didn’t experience any slowdowns in multitasking—in fact, the difference in app launch times compared to my slower DDR4 system was quite clear. The combination of a strong iGPU and fast DDR5 memory gave me a great balance between cost and performance. For the motherboard, I went with a simple model that had a limited number of PCIe slots, which helped reduce power draw and made the build easier. I found that cutting down on PCIe slots didn’t hurt future expandability since most of my needs were already covered by the iGPU and RAM. If you’re building on a tight budget, I’d recommend focusing on a processor with a strong iGPU and fast DDR5 memory—even if the capacity is lower—as it ensures smooth gaming and low power consumption.

The goal was to avoid a dedicated GPU, and I found that lighter games like Valorant and League of Legends run smoothly on Medium settings without any stuttering. I used 8GB of DDR5-2400MHz RAM instead of DDR4, and while the power draw difference wasn’t huge, the higher bandwidth of DDR5 did improve overall CPU and iGPU performance. If your priority is saving money while still getting decent performance, I’d recommend a processor with a strong integrated GPU like the 5600G or 5600GE, paired with 8GB (or 12GB if you can afford it) of DDR5. Also, pick a motherboard that supports PCIe 4.0 and has fewer slots to cut power draw and simplify the build. This setup gives you solid light gaming and multitasking without needing a separate graphics card.
