I'm building a PC on a tight budget and want to find the best combination of parts that offers decent performance for both light gaming and everyday tasks (office work, multimedia). I'm wondering whether it's smarter to prioritize a good CPU and use integrated graphics, or invest in a modest graphics card and downgrade the processor a bit. I'm also considering RAM capacity and storage type (SSD vs. HDD) to optimize load times without breaking the bank. What criteria do you follow when balancing these components in a budget build? Any strategies that have worked well in your builds? 🎮💻

In a tight budget, it's usually more cost-effective to go for an APU that combines a decent CPU and GPU, like the Ryzen 5 5600G or the older 3400G, because you get two functions in a single chip and free up space for other critical components. With that solution, you can allocate the rest of your money to 16GB of DDR4 RAM at 3200MHz (it's the sweet spot between cost and performance) and a 500GB NVMe SSD; the jump in load times and system smoothness is significant compared to a traditional HDD. If you prefer a discrete graphics card, the strategy changes: the processor can drop down to a Ryzen 3 4100 or an Intel i3-12100, while the GPU budget goes toward a used GTX 1650 Super or RTX 3050. In that scenario, making sure you have at least 8GB of RAM (ideally 16GB, but 8GB will work) and a 250GB SSD for the OS and heavier games is key to avoiding I/O bottlenecks. Now, if your maximum spending limit is under €600, which combination would you prioritize: a powerful APU with an SSD and 16GB of RAM, or a modest GPU and a cheaper CPU but with the same amount of RAM?
