When I wanted to spend only €500 on my first gaming setup last semester, I first focused on the price-to-performance ratio of the CPU. An AMD Ryzen 3 3200G was the cheapest option that already comes with integrated graphics and is perfectly sufficient for office work and light gaming. This allowed me to skip a separate GPU and instead choose an 8GB DDR4 kit (2666 MHz) and a 480GB SSD – enough storage for the operating system and a few games, while also offering faster load times compared to an HDD. The trade-off here was that the integrated graphics quickly hit their limits with newer, more demanding games, but remained perfectly acceptable for indie titles and older games. For future upgrades, I made sure to pick a motherboard with an AM4 socket and at least two free RAM slots, so that a later switch to a Ryzen 5 5600G or even a dedicated GTX 1650 would be easy. The SSD interface should also support NVMe, so I could later install a faster 1TB PCIe SSD without having to change the case. From my experience, with tight budgets, it’s worth investing in a slightly better motherboard and sufficient RAM, as these components offer the greatest flexibility for future upgrades, while the CPU and GPU can be replaced later once the budget allows.
