For comparison, it's worth considering the two most popular approaches: "engine heat dissipation" (where hot gases or coolant transfer heat to the battery via a special heat exchanger) and separate electric heating elements integrated into the battery casing. The first method is almost free of additional costs—the system is already in the car, and the controller simply switches the heat flow. However, its efficiency heavily depends on the engine load: during prolonged idling in a garage, there might not be enough heat, and the battery will still be cold. Electric heaters, on the other hand, operate independently of the engine and can provide a fixed power output (usually 100–300 W). Their downside is that they draw power from the battery itself, reducing the range by 3–5% in cold conditions, though this is often offset by faster warm-up times, which can shorten the wait before departure. From a practical standpoint, I’ve already tried a combined approach: I installed a small thermostatic module that activates the heating element only when the battery temperature drops below -10°C and shuts it off once it reaches -5°C. This hybrid method saves energy while avoiding long warm-up times in the garage. The main benefits include quick starts, reduced risk of voltage drops, and less battery wear. The downsides involve extra installation work and minor autonomy losses, but these are usually justified in regions with prolonged freezing temperatures. If you compare this to traditional "cabin heating," often used to defrost windows, preheating the battery is more efficient because it targets the energy system directly rather than passenger comfort. Unlike a full-body heating system, an integrated module doesn’t take up much space and doesn’t require major changes to the car’s electronics. So, when choosing, it’s best to consider the climate and how often you drive in cold weather—if trips are rare, simple heat dissipation may suffice, but for daily winter driving in harsh conditions, investing in active electric heating is the better choice.

I've been using a plug-in heater on my EV for a couple of winters now, and the difference is huge. Wiring a 12V heater to the grid lets the battery sit at around 15°C before I even get in the car, so the range loss drops from roughly 30% to under 10% in sub-zero temps. The downside is the extra power draw at home—you’ll see a noticeable bump on your electricity bill if you forget to unplug it after the car’s warmed up. For ICE-based cars, I’ve tried an engine-block heat exchanger that routes hot coolant through a small heat-sink attached to the battery pack. It’s a neat trick because it piggybacks on the engine’s own warm-up phase, so you don’t need a separate power source. The trade-off is a bit of added complexity to the cooling system and the need for a reliable control valve; if the valve sticks closed, the battery can still get cold. Overall, both approaches shave a good chunk off pre-heat time and keep the battery from “freezing up,” but you have to balance the extra components and electricity cost against the winter performance gain.
