I've always heard about it but never really understood what it's actually used for. I know it's used to improve performance during media streaming from websites, but could you explain it in more detail? Which systems does it integrate with, and in what situations does it become essential?

You can think of a CDN like robot assistants in a distribution center. For example, when a new series is uploaded to Netflix’s server in the U.S., it needs to deliver that content at the same speed to users worldwide. Without a CDN, direct downloads from the U.S. would cause delays (latency) and slow loading times. That’s where the CDN steps in: it copies the data to regional servers (edge servers) in different countries and directs users to the nearest location. Just like 7-Eleven on every corner, the CDN delivers the data "close by," reducing wait times almost to zero. On the integration side, CDNs work seamlessly with nearly all major systems. Providers like Cloudflare or Fastly can be easily integrated with WordPress using plugins, with AWS via settings (CloudFront), or with custom software (Node.js projects). When it comes to necessity, CDNs are indispensable for e-commerce sites, live-streaming platforms (Twitch, YouTube), or any service with a global user base. For instance, during Black Friday, an e-commerce site suddenly needs to serve millions of users—CDNs distribute the load to prevent server crashes, much like how Tokyo’s metro system disperses morning traffic.
