I've been diving into the basics of music production and keep hearing about DAWs handling everything from recording to mixing. Can someone break down, in general terms, how a digital audio workstation processes an incoming audio signal? Specifically, what's the typical signal flow, how do plugins fit into that chain, and what role does the host's timeline play? Looking for a clear overview without focusing on any specific software.

Thanks for the clear breakdown—basically the DAW takes the incoming audio, converts it via the ADC, routes it through the track’s plugin chain (EQ, compression, etc.), then mixes and sends it out through the DAC, all synced to the host’s timeline which governs clip placement, automation and playback position. Just curious, are you more interested in how the host handles real‑time processing versus offline bounce?
