How do variable valve timing systems affect engine torque across the RPM range?

Variable valve timing (VVT) is often praised for expanding the powerband, but the exact mechanics can be confusing. In theory, VVT adjusts valve opening events to match engine speed and load, but how does this translate into torque gains at low RPM versus high RPM? Are there diminishing returns when the system is pushed to extreme revs? I’m interested in the underlying physics and practical implications for a high‑performance build. What’s your take on the trade‑offs?

I tweaked the VVT on my 2.0L build by advancing the intake cam slightly at low RPM and retarding it near the redline, which gave a solid 7-8% torque boost on the low end with no noticeable drop at peak power. Using a basic ECU map to control the timing lets you fine-tune the trade-off without adding extra hardware.
