With the rise of electric powertrains, many enthusiasts wonder how this shift impacts traditional car restoration practices. Specifically, what challenges arise when adapting classic chassis to fit battery packs, motor mounts, and modern control systems? Are there trade-offs between preserving original aesthetics and meeting today’s performance expectations? I’m curious about the engineering and design considerations involved. How do you balance authenticity with the practicalities of an electric conversion?

I recently completed a 1974 E-Type conversion for a client who wanted the classic look but zero emissions. The biggest challenge was finding space for the battery pack without compromising the original floor pan. We ended up cutting a shallow channel into the tunnel, reinforcing it with a sub-frame, and bolting a 70 kWh pack low and centered to maintain the car’s original front-biased weight distribution. Mounting the motor was easier than expected—the original transmission tunnel provided a solid mounting point. However, we had to fabricate custom brackets to align the motor’s shaft with the rear differential, and a bit of driveshaft truing took care of the vibration issues. Aesthetically, the biggest compromise was the original rear "swept-back" trunk lid, which had to be raised a few centimeters to clear the new motor housing. We fabricated a subtle metal extension that mimicked the original sheet metal grain and powder-coated it to match. The modern control modules are tucked behind the dash where the original gauge cluster sat, and we kept the classic analog gauges by feeding them signals from the EV’s CAN bus. In the end, the car still feels like a classic roadster, but with instant torque and silent operation. The trade-off was mostly a bit of extra height and a few custom brackets—something I think is a reasonable price for preserving the look while gaining contemporary performance.
