At this stage, IPv4 addresses are nearly exhausted, while IPv6 offers a much larger address space and improved features. However, migration costs and compatibility issues remain key considerations. I'm leaning toward a dual-stack approach—keeping IPv4 alive while gradually rolling out IPv6 wherever devices support it. In my smart-home setup, I hit the same wall when trying to integrate a newer Zigbee gateway that only advertised an IPv6 address. The old routers were still serving all my legacy IoT devices, so cutting off IPv4 would’ve broken a lot of things overnight. By enabling IPv6 on the core network and leaving IPv4 at the edge, I could test the new gear one piece at a time without any service interruptions. The biggest win for me has been the smoother transition; most of my Home Assistant add-ons and integrations already handle IPv6 out of the box, and the few that don’t fall back to IPv4 seamlessly. This way, I’m future-proofing the house without paying the massive upgrade cost all at once, and I can decommission IPv4 bits when they finally become unnecessary.

Last year, when I migrated my smart lighting and temperature-humidity sensors from an IPv4 to an IPv6 environment at home, I ran into quite a few real-world issues. At first, I tried enabling dual-stack mode directly on the router so that new devices could get IPv6 addresses while keeping their old IPv4 ones. The upside was that older phone apps still worked fine, while the new ESP32 sensors used IPv6 directly, avoiding NAT forwarding delays. The main challenge during migration was that some legacy IoT gateways only supported IPv4, so I had to manually add IPv6 prefixes in bridge mode—otherwise, data would drop. After months of debugging, I realized that running both protocols side-by-side was the smoothest transition: keeping IPv4 on the core network to ensure all old devices stayed unaffected, while deploying an IPv6 subnet on the LAN for new devices and future smart home systems. This way, I could take advantage of IPv6’s large address space and simpler routing without having to replace all hardware at once. So, I’m leaning toward “dual-stack coexistence,” gradually shifting services and devices to IPv6, and only turning off IPv4 once all old gear is phased out.
