Should you daydream while making beats?

When I start laying down beats, I always get suggestions like "first find a sample, then loop it, and finally mix." But what if I want to start by imagining the beat and then turning that vision into reality? Do you guys work like that too, or are you more of the "loop first" type? I think sometimes the best ideas come just by listening, without even touching any tools. What do you think?

Man, I totally feel the same way as you! I had the same experience on a new project recently—instead of opening up the gear and hunting for samples, I spent some time building loops in my head and then recorded. Plus, the sounds that come out when I do it that way are way more unique and original. I think dreaming up a bit before searching for samples lets us wander in a less restrictive space than before. I usually craft imaginary beats either before bed at night or while sipping coffee in the morning. Then I sit down and bring those ideas to life. So I’m one of those who embraces a method like yours; I find the loop‑first approach way too limiting. Give it a try, dude—you’ll see it’s a pretty fun technique!
