Combining BGP with MPLS provides stability and flexibility in large-scale networks, but in smaller networks, it can lead to unnecessary complexity. BGP manages routing between different ASes, while MPLS offers an infrastructure that optimizes traffic. This combination makes sense for central networks of multinational companies or cloud service providers—where it both routes and accelerates traffic flow. However, if you're just trying to connect your small shop to Netflix, BGP route repairs can take forever, and you won’t benefit from MPLS’s premium features. So unless your traffic volume and complexity are moderate to advanced, this duo is unlikely to align with your budget. When it comes to weaknesses, the biggest issue is configuration complexity and troubleshooting time. Combining BGP’s AS_PATH calculations with MPLS’s label switching can eat up your entire day during debugging—especially when additional layers like L3VPN or QoS are involved. For a small-scale WAN, simple static routing or SD-WAN solutions are often sufficient; they’re more cost-effective and easier to manage. The scenarios where you’d prefer this setup are usually those where you need the precision of BGP routing and the traffic engineering power of MPLS: think international banks, global SaaS companies, or telecom operators. One last note: if you're looking for alternatives to MPLS, segment routing or SD-WAN solutions are serious contenders. These days, many startups opt for IPVPN over MPLS—or even just GRE/IPsec tunnels—especially if their cybersecurity and backup strategies are solid. As a small company CTO, my advice is: analyze your network traffic first, then design your architecture accordingly. Otherwise, you might be stuck with an unnecessary bill and a headache.
