I've been doing VoIP-based calls at home for several years, but I occasionally experience signal dropouts on my WiFi network. Do voice data streams like VoIP protocols (SIP, RTP) seriously strain the WiFi band? For example, would switching from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz make a difference? Or should I try QoS settings to limit traffic?

I've found from experience that VoIP traffic can seriously impact WiFi bandwidth, especially during peak usage, because voice data needs to be transmitted continuously and with low latency. Along with SIP signaling traffic, RTP streams stand out not only for their bandwidth usage but also for their sensitivity to latency and jitter. I noticed this firsthand when I experienced frequent signal drops and degraded call quality on the 2.4 GHz band—it turned out the issue was entirely due to VoIP traffic. If there’s additional heavy usage on the network (like multiple devices sharing the same channel), the problem only gets worse. The 5 GHz band is a real lifesaver in this situation. After switching, my signal drops were almost completely gone, and overall network performance improved. That’s because 5 GHz offers wider channels, is used by fewer devices, and has less interference from other gadgets (like microwaves). Of course, it’s not a perfect fix for every scenario—especially if you have older devices that don’t support 5 GHz. I’d strongly recommend enabling QoS settings. Once I turned it on, VoIP traffic no longer got bogged down by other data, and my call quality improved significantly. By prioritizing VoIP traffic on my router, I ensured it wouldn’t be dominated by other network activity, which is key to maintaining service quality. You can also boost overall network performance by limiting unnecessary background traffic.

I'd recommend switching to the 5 GHz band—it's way less crowded than 2.4 GHz and perfect for VoIP. If you can, set up QoS too; if your modem has an option like "Voice Priority," definitely enable it. I cut my dropouts by 90% after making the change.
