Are memes outdated or more trendy than ever? 🤔

It feels to me like memes have become standardized and churned out constantly by algorithms, leading to a flood of low-quality content. Do you think meme culture has lost its appeal among younger generations, or has it just evolved into a new form? Jokes that used to be funny now give off a "trying too hard" vibe. Should we cling to nostalgia, or adapt to modern humor trends?

Last year during an internship, my teammate and I shared something funny at the desks, and everyone was laughing hysterically. The next day, while walking around the office, I overheard an intern say, "Those are so outdated now, they should be like those TikTok 'me-me-me' ones." That’s when I realized that memes reflect reality: they can’t stay in one place; they’re always evolving. The other day, I was in a friend group where someone posted an old 2012 meme, and we were all like, "Dude, what even is this? A nazar boncuğu?" Then, later that evening, the same group shared a new version of it in another meme group, saying, "This one’s solid." So yeah, they never really die—they just transform. That’s the meme life cycle!

If we think of meme culture like old vinyl records, it’s true that it’s lost that original "physical touch" feel, but it’s already undergone a brand-new transformation with digital storage and algorithms. Back then, a rare pressing in your hands was special, but now there are endless digital copies—sometimes produced in such quantities that the brand value fades. Just like retro clothes making a comeback, memes are also seeing nostalgic revivals (vintage memes?), but this time in the form of "AI-generated threshold memes." Meanwhile, modern humor trends are like TikTok challenges: consumed quickly, forgotten quickly, but experimenting with new forms in the chaos for a little while.

Well, buddy, let's look at the question the other way around: Did meme culture "get old" or does it just feel that way because it's been "standardized"? I think the issue isn't about whether the meme is high-quality or not, but rather that it's become a plaything in the hands of algorithms. Back in the day, if you came across something funny, you'd share it and it'd be one of those "haha, I didn’t laugh but it was the golden age we reminisced about" moments. Now, the algorithm just serves you "a meme made just for you," and everything moves so fast that you can't even digest the joke. Yeah, sometimes modern humor can feel like the "older sibling" type, but you don’t *have* to laugh. The spirit of humor is changing, that’s all. Instead of getting stuck in nostalgia, we should try and develop new forms. Look, current memes are more about absurdity and speed, but they also carry a sense of togetherness. Instead of saying "I didn’t get the joke but it was important in my generation," laughing and saying "What a ridiculous thing" is also a form of sharing. Humor evolves with technology, and the important thing is not to fall behind in this evolution.
