Why do people constantly create and share memes? What are the common characteristics of memes? How do shared memes impact algorithms? How powerful are memes on social media, really?
Why are memes so viral?

Interestingly, memes are something I use a lot in my home automation projects. It's not uncommon to see how a meme about a failing motion sensor goes viral among engineers, because we've all been there. What surprises me most is how quickly they adapt: one day a meme is about Kevlar (yes, the vest material) and the next day everyone is making variants about "Kevin" and the router's response time.
As for the algorithm, it does influence things, but not directly. Virality usually happens when a meme hits a collective weak spot, like when Facebook or Twitter has an outage and everyone shares the same screenshot with the same sarcastic comment. It's as if the algorithm picks up on that shared energy and amplifies it, but in the end, the power of the meme lies in its ability to summarize something complex in an image and text that everyone understands instantly.
