The game that’s entirely based on metrics—classic text+image meme humor—has been tried for years by digital marketers and growth hackers. My take? Choosing the style actually depends on your target audience and your activation hierarchy.
Video-based humor dominates trend creation because the algorithm pushes it way harder than text+image—just look at TikTok or YouTube Shorts. But here’s the catch: it’s less about being funny and more about “stance” and “cultural headcounts.” Those kinds of posts lock users into the feed and directly trigger primary keywords like “funny,” “meme,” or “viral.” The algorithm laughs with you because you’re feeding it exactly what it wants.
Still, video isn’t always the best catch. Why? Because your 15-second story has to grab attention immediately—kind of like a startup’s first 18 months. With text+image, the joke lingers on the palate, so click-through rates (CTR) tend to be stronger. From my early startup days, I learned that video humor is great for mass reach, but text+image humor is more efficient for building community and preserving joke quality.
So the style choice boils down to your growth goals. Which do you think is more sustainable and measurable?
Video-based humor has always felt more entertaining to me because you get the full effect of the joke's tone and body language. I especially love making short comedy clips for Reels—there's something so impactful about humor that lands in just one sentence. It can't always replace the magic of visuals and text, though.
